Road Trip Planner App Reviews

Very good, very inexpensive road mapping tool

This is a very good program, this program is in a class of its own. The developer is updating regularly and very responsive to any comments or questions. There are iPad/iPhone versions. The program to me was intuitive, clear and is easy to work with. It is also not expensive when you realize what you get. I find most GPS programs difficult to work with. The just don’t seem willing to show or do what I’m looking for. Not the case with Road Trip Planner, dates, directions, times, points of interest along the routes, all can be included in this program. I plan my long distance driving this way. In my opinion the best road trip planner for sale for the Mac. High praise!

Good travel planning app

I’ve been looking for an app for the Mac for planning road trips. I’ve used Streets & Trips for Windows for years but Microsoft no longer has it, and I’m now using a Macbook as my primary computer. This app provides a lot of the functionality of Streets & Trips. It operates differently but is easy enough to use. The one thing I miss from Streets and Trips is that it suggested where we might stop for the night based on how long we usually travel in a day. Then I would pick the closest city to that point. With Road Trip planner I have to experiment and check various places until I find one that gives us the best daily travel distance/time. I like the way you can select points of interest in this app and later move them to the route pin list if you want. Overall this is a good trip planning tool.

Really helpful

The app works perfectly, It’s helping me a lot on planning my next trip. You can check your plan with your iPhone, it’s really easy to use... But I miss the fact that they didn’t create the option to download your plan and access off-line. As I am travelling to a different country, this feature would be an asset. Besides that, still very useful. Cheers!

Useful Planning Tool

I have recently purchased this app and have begun using it to plan a trip from Toronto to Florida via Louisiana and home again this winter. The learning curve is fairly easy and there are a number of ‘hidden’ features that you need to discover. For example the Date Tab and the “Time At This Location” feature. The author is very responsive to questions and suggestions and the on-line Support Group is also very helpful. I would recommend this to anyone who is planning a road trip.

Best tool for planning a camping trip

I bought this app about 3 weeks ago for a long camping trip (10-12 weeks) across Canada & USA. I did look at different apps before getting serious about inputting the data for of my trip. Since I will pull my small camping trailer all the way, I want to limit the distance or the time on the road so I can spend more time enjoying different campground I will go through. I am using this app for 2 weeks now and love most the features. I am still in the learning mode of all the built-in features (some I did not use yet) but so far I really recommend this app for planning a trip with many details to keep track of, such as : address of the campground, telephone, email, URL, cost, reservation number, date, etc. We can add different activities for each location we plan to spend time and many Point Of Interest (POI) with many details. I like the feature of showing alternate route with time and distance between 2 points. I still have to understand how the time and date for each activities and travelling time really work. The designer of the app is very responsive and already gave me some ways to make it work how I want to (I did not try them yet). Few options are still missing in my mind, such as keeping the last route selected because every time we start the app, the routes are gone. I was told this is a feature of Apple Maps which provide the underlying data. Also it would be nice to easily make a backup of the plan made (same trip but different route or activities to spend and compare them before committing to one choice), specially if you have many stops (I have more than 55 stops in my camping trip). Right now I have to use the Finder to make copy of previous plan before I make extensive change to experiment different version of my trip. I strongly recommend this app when you plan the whole trip yourself. It give you full control of your trip !

Perfect

Purchased this app to replace the Microsoft Streets and Maps which is not available for Mac. Very similar in function and display. This app allows you to layout a route easily and make modificatioins as you go along. Time and distance between pins is very helpful. The ability to insert a location from your contacts is great! No regrets on this purchase!

Road Trip Planner

Been using Streets & trips for many, many years, found it very easy to use. Therefore upset when heard was no longer available. Thought this would be as good if not better which suited me as I mainly use a Mac. Spent well over an hour trying to get sorted out with the basics last night. It is awful, very difficult. I will make a few more attempts before I junk it. Looks like a complete waste of money. Great pity! Don’t waste your money. Not worth even one star!

Best app!

Best app, if You want to plan Your routewith details. Everything I needed. Easy to use, stable, not overloaded with features. Everything in place. Waiting for some localizations. Good work !

Google maps?

Hi there! Any chance to get Google Maps as primary maps engine? Default maps are so poor and it makes whole app useless as to plan my trip I really need most detailed map, which will know all small cities, roads and even off-road paths (google maps know this all). I can’t rate this app higher than 2 due to concern described above, sorry. And honestly speaking I would like to get my money back. Thanks.

non evidenzia il percorso sulla mappa

problem solved. thank you for the support.

disapointing

dont waste your money. terrible search funtion, difficult to plot points on the map. useless.

Developer continues to improve it.

UPDATE: I reviewed the first release of this app, which didn’t do much. Since then, the developer has released at least four updates that continue to improve the app. I’m upgrading my rating to three stars and look forward to continued development. ________________________________________ The app doesn’t do much. You can get routes from Apple Maps, Google Maps, Mapquest, etc. Routes are not customizable (i.e., it gives you one route per set of pins). You can’t calculate rest stops or do any real trip planning. Save the five bucks

Risk of Early Adoption

I was hopeful that Road Trip Planner would be at least somewhat helpful with planning a road trip, but my expectations werent met. Road Trip Planner is simply not intuitive. I found it frustratingly difficult to comprehend. It doesnt appear to provide any means of specifying a daily start and end drive time or a stop duration for destinations along a route. Further, while the Mac Maps app has improved to the point where it can identify with reasonable accuracy certain destinations by simple name, Road Trip Planner appears to be using a different, and substantially limited, dataset as it seems quite incapable of identifying even major landmarks as destinations. Still, Im quite hopeful that the developer will improve the product over time. Until Road Trip Planner version 2.x, or even 3.x is released and is capable of being at least a passable road trip planning tool, Im afraid Ill have to keep depending on MS Streets & Trips running on a Windows VM.

great tool

I’m not aware of another product available for the Mac that provides the same functionality. I’ve already seen quite a few positive changes recently and the developer is very responsive, churning out updates. I like having the ability to plan my trip via an app that I can come back to as necessary and be able to include photos, notes, etc. The tool allows you to rearrange “pins” as you decide how to adjust your road trip. I’ve been able to add lots of side activities and points of interest to my road-trip-in-planning that would I’m not sure how I’d accomplish the old fashioned way. I’m quite happy with the app so far and I’m looking forward to new features and functions as the “roadmap” progresses !

Great App

This I found to be so easy to use and store trips on. I am not a reader of how things work, I just start working away, and this app was as easy as pie to figure out. Changing routes and details were easy and I was well pleased. It is a little gem that is making my next holiday a pleasure to plan.

Great app if you travel

I don’t often post reviews but this app is really useful if you travel and have a number of stops along the way. I’m essentially a traveling sales rep and have to visit a number of different regions in the North East US. RTP makes it easy to visualize and plan my stops and even keep track of notes and now much gas cost, etc. So it’s a unique and extremely helpful way to plan and manage my life on the road. The icing on the cake is that the developer is extremely responsive and open to suggestions. Be wary of the negative reviews. Yes - it does take a little effort to learn the interface, but the rewards are great for your effort. It’s a great value!

Road Trip Planning

I picked up RTP (2.0) 3 days ago. My wife & I are full time travelers in a Airstream trailer. We’ve been to 49 of the 50 states more than once. RTP seems unbelievably well written for a relatively new app. The developer answers each of the comments sent to the SUPPORT pages. That is unusual and it will eventually lead to a terrific app even though it’s probably 75% of the way to terrific as it stands. RTP already is better than Microsoft’s Streets & Trips that I used for the past 5-8 years. There really needs to be rating stars beyond 5 for apps this good.

Not Ready For Prime Time

This software may have potential, but is pretty dysfunctional for my needs. Gives you the option of enabling or not enabling location tracking. I prefer not to have it enabled for my purposes because it adds nothing to the effort to find vactions locations. However, by NOT enabling location tracking, the stupid thing gives you a pop-up every few seconds telling you tracking is not enabled. You obviously already know that, and I’ve found no way to disable the pop-ups. So, you have the choice to be tracked or to uninstall the software. Moreover, the support website is totally Google. I trust Apple long before I trust Google. Just don’t by this software.

Not Ready For Prime Time

I bought this app hoping to have an easy to use, intuitive user interface. I use several Garmin GPS, Google Maps, Google Earth, Garmin TrailRunner and BaseCamp. All of these have slightly different interfaces but it doesn’t take long to figure any of them out. However, Road Trip Planner fails in intuitiveness. It wants you to make a complete itinerary which may be fine for very detailed and involved trips but for a 2 or 3 day business trip it is far too involved. Maybe if I was taking a few weeks and wanted to plan out every single moment of my life for those weeks then this might be a decent app. But until it has more versatility or becomes more intuitive, 2 Stars only from me.

The Best Travel App On the Market

Route Trip Planner is the cleverest, most intuitive trip planning apps I have found. RTP has the design feel of an experienced traveler wanting to keep all his/her travel information in one location and easily accessible. And the tech support from the developer is world class. I have asked a couple of questions and received answers within 12 hours both times. The user interface is so intuitive that it makes trip planning a drag and drop process. Type in a location in the search box and when a map loads, simply drop a pin to identify it. Enter departure, arrival times, important notes regarding the location, sights to see, etc and then create routes. The route creation automatically calculates driving time and distances between pin locations. I am using it to plan my family trip to Ireland this July. I will be gone for 12 days visiting 21 locations… all of them located on RTP. Absolutely won’t leave on a trip without this app. The only drawback at this point is syncing across my ios devices. Drop box and Apple maps are the only way to sync at this point, but I do believe the developer is working on a Route Trip Planner ios app that will make syncing across all devices a simple process. This app is so valuable to me that for now, I am content to wait for a better syncing option as I enjoy the benefits of the current RTP.
